A Canadian lawyer says he is concerned that the country is not treating its Jewish population with respect, and that the government’s policy is to “hide behind the principle of equality”.
“We have no policy to treat Jewish Israelis in Canada like any other Canadian citizens,” lawyer John C. D’Amico said in an interview with CBC News.
“It’s a blanket policy.
The fact that there is no policy, no guideline, no guidelines for dealing with the Jewish population in Canada is the issue that is causing us so much concern.”
In his book “The Problem with Canada: The Truth About How We Treat Our Jewish People,” D’Amicos argues that Canada has no policy on dealing with Israeli Jews, and instead is hiding behind a blanket approach that doesn’t protect Jewish people from discrimination.
“We don’t treat Jewish people like we treat other Canadians,” he said.
“They are being discriminated against and they are being subjected to the kind of discrimination that I’ve seen from the other side of the border.
They are being denied the right to live in our country.
It’s so frustrating.”
Calls for more toleranceIn a series of interviews with CBC, D’Anico has also called on Canada to “think more about how we treat our Jewish people” and to make sure “the Jewish community in Canada feels respected”.
In his view, the Canadian government is failing its Jewish community and is in danger of being viewed as a “sanctuary nation”.
“I have a feeling that we are a country that’s not really listening to what it takes to address the real issues facing Jews in Canada,” D-Amico told CBC News in a phone interview.
“It’s not just the anti-Semitism problem that I’m talking about.
It seems like this policy is just being left to the other extreme, and we’re doing it behind the backs of the Jewish community.”
D’Amicos is a Toronto-based lawyer who has defended clients such as the families of Palestinian refugees and those who were killed by Israeli settlers during the 2006-2009 Palestinian uprising.
He has been called “one of the leading Jewish immigration lawyers” in Canada.
D’Alicos says that since Israel is the only country in the world to have a “permanent occupation” of the West Bank, it has a right to “declare an end to the occupation”.
“There is no law that says Israel can’t have a permanent occupation in the West Wall.
The only legal basis for Israel to do that is the Israeli Supreme Court,” he added.”
There are Israeli citizens living in the occupied territories.
They live under the same laws that Israelis are permitted to live under.”
D-Alicosi says that despite the law that permits Israel to build settlements in the territories, the government refuses to acknowledge that the construction is illegal.
“In Canada, you can’t be a Jew and be a citizen and be treated like a citizen.
That’s the law,” he told CBC.”
What happens in Israel, is that if you are an Israeli citizen, you are considered a Jew.
If you are Palestinian, you’re considered a non-Jewish.”
D’macos argues the government should take a more “progressive approach” and address the issues raised by the Palestinian population.
“The problem is that it’s just a blanket rule that is never enforced.
There’s no law.
It doesn’t matter if you’re Jewish or Palestinian, if you live in Israel you’re treated like every other Israeli citizen,” he explained.”
And if you don’t like the treatment, there’s nothing that you can do.
If we don’t change that policy, we’re going to be the next Israel.”
