When it comes to access to legal representation, states like Maryland, California and New York have some of the strictest requirements in the country.
Here are 10 states that have a higher number of attorneys per capita than any other in the nation.

The state has the highest proportion of attorneys in the entire country at 11.7%, while the state’s median household poverty is just $18,912.
In California, where the median household is $58,300, Maryland has the third highest percentage at 11%, while California’s median poverty is $30,200.
In New York, where it’s $75,600, the median income is $81,600 and the median poverty level is $37,600.
The average hourly wage for a lawyer is $45.40 in Maryland, which has the lowest median hourly wage in the U and fifth highest in the United States, according the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
In California, the average hourly wages are $37.70 in the state, while the median hourly wages in New York are $46.70.
In New York state, the typical attorney earns about $61,500 a year, according in the Bureau’s Bureau of Justice Statistics.
That’s up from $57,600 in 2012.
In 2016, the attorney was making $51,700, which is about $6,100 more than the typical lawyer in New Jersey.
In Maryland and New Jersey, lawyers make about $67,000 a year.
In both states, lawyers earn an average of $77,200 a year while the average annual income of a lawyer who practices in Maryland is $85,100.
In both states the median annual household income is about about $71,300.
In all, Maryland and California have the highest rate of attorneys working in law firms.
The median household incomes of Maryland lawyers is about half of the median of New Jersey lawyers.

The average annual salary of a Maryland lawyer was $86,000, while a New Jersey lawyer’s average salary was $65,800.

The cities with the lowest rates of attorneys practicing law are located in the South and Midwest, with average incomes of $70,300 and $73,200 in 2017, respectively.
