– The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has named shapira attorney Andrew Shapiro as the sole lawyer representing the plaintiffs in a lawsuit challenging the legality of Washington’s new abortion clinic restrictions.
The lawsuit is currently before the Washington State Supreme Court, which is expected to rule on the suit next week.
Shapiro, who was appointed to the bench by President Donald Trump in 2018, has defended the state’s restrictions on abortion clinics and clinics providing abortions, arguing that the state has a compelling interest in protecting women from the threat of a second abortion.
Shappiro’s legal team is seeking to have the court overturn the restrictions that took effect March 1.
The state is trying to block the lawsuit, which seeks to strike down the restrictions in their entirety.
Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson said Friday the law is intended to protect women, not deter abortion providers from performing abortions.
“The state’s purpose in enacting this law is to ensure that women in Washington will have safe access to safe, legal abortions,” Ferguson said.
“It is also important to note that the restrictions are not intended to prevent women from obtaining legal abortions.
They are simply intended to ensure they can access safe, safe abortions.”
